Flood Preparedness: What to Do When Water Enters Your Home

1. Identify the Source

If it’s safe, try to determine where the water is coming from:

  • Seepage: Clear water coming through cracks in basement walls or floors.

  • Sewer Backup: Water entering through floor drains or plumbing fixtures.

  • Overland Flooding: Water from heavy rain entering through windows, doors, or low points.

  • Other Sources: Plumbing leaks, roof leaks, or a failed sump pump.

Depending on the source, you may need help from a licensed plumber or contractor.

2. Notify Your Municipality

Report flooding right away:

  • In Chicago: Call 3-1-1, visit 311.chicago.org, or use the CHI311 app.

  • In Suburban Cook County: Contact your local public works department.

Your local municipality manages the neighborhood sewers that connect to MWRD’s larger system. It’s important they know about flooding to respond effectively and plan future stormwater solutions.

3. Document and Clean Up Safely

Follow FEMA guidelines to:

  • Thoroughly document any damage.

  • Take safety precautions during cleanup.

  • Prevent mold and further structural damage.

The MWRD sends out Overflow Action Alerts as reminders to conserve water when heavy rains are forecast.
